- Matt Donovan was born in Mystic Falls and raised alongside his sister Vicki Donovan by their alcoholic mother, Kelly Donovan. Matt doesn’t know the whereabouts of his father and his relationship with his mother has always been fragile.
- Matt has been friends with Elena Gilbert since infancy as their mothers were friends. When they reached their teens they decided to be together but after the tragic death of Elena’s parents she broke up with him. Matt has never really gotten over Elena even though he has dated Caroline since then.
- When the Salvatores arrived in town at first he was jealous because he felt like Stefan was ruining his opportunity to get back together with Elena. However after time the two have become friends as Stefan tried to help save Matt’s sister Vicki.
- Matt has never quite been the same since his sister was turned and then staked. His relationship with his mother has completely disintegrated after he caught her making out with both Damon Salvatore and Tyler Lockwood. He kicked her out of the house and hasn’t seen her since.
- After Klaus killed Tyler to turn him into a hybrid, Bonnie and Matt realised the only way to find out how to save him was to talk to one of the dead who knew how. Since at the time they couldn’t contact Jeremy, Matt sacrificed himself, drowning himself in the school pool, only to be resuscitated by Bonnie. When he awoke he had become a medium just like Jeremy and was now able to speak to the dead. He used his abilities to talk to his dead sister Vicki and they saved Tyler. However after Vicki began to go insane and stabbed him, Bonnie helped Matt realise the only way she would go away was if he let her move on.
- Matt felt entirely alone in Mystic Falls, he has no family left and his friends were all completely absorbed in their insane supernaturally led lives. This is why he feels moving to Mystic Harbor is the perfect thing for all of them. He hopes that moving to a new town will help keep them safe from any more pain.
- When he arrived in Mystic Harbor and began to meet the new people of the town he felt a connection with Melissa Glaser. The way that she too was haunted by the death of a loved one meant that he felt he had someone who could understand his pain. He doesn’t yet know what she is but all he wants right now is to have a normal life once again – he’s not sure he can handle any more supernatural.
